Backing up your website

Last Update: February 9, 2025

It’s always a good idea to keep a backup, or several backups, of your website. This is especially important when you are troubleshooting issues on your site as the support team may need to make changes that could affect site content. This is why our CX team will always ask you to back up your site before they begin working on it.

There are several ways to back up your site as discussed below.

Warning
No matter what backup system you use, you should test your backup using a staging site to make sure it is reliable and has retained all your site’s content. You can learn more about staging sites from these blog posts:

Managing website backups on Elementor Hosting

Elementor Hosting comes with its own backup system, letting you quickly and easily back up your site. To learn how to back up your Elementor Hosting site, see Back up your Elementor Hosting site

Note
You can download a copy of any of your backups as well. For details, see Manage your Elementor Hosting backups.
Tip
It is highly recommended that you download a backup of your site on a regular basis to prevent any loss of data.
Note
Check your hosting plan for any restrictions on how many backups you can store and how long they are kept for.

Use your hosting company’s backup system

Many hosting companies have their own backup systems. These are usually found on your website dashboard. Check your hosting company’s documentation for details about backing up your site.

Backing up your site using  cPanel

Hosted sites are often controlled with cPanel. This is a web-based control panel that helps with your website and server management by providing a graphical interface and automation tools.

To back up your site using cPanel:

  1. Log into your hosting provider.
  2. Open cPanel
  3. Go to the Files section.
  4. Click Download a Full Account Backup.
  5. Enter your email address.
  6. Click Generate Backup. Leave cPanel open.
  7. When the backup is complete, a message is sent to your email address.
  8. Return to cPanel and click the file name.

The file is downloaded to your computer.

Using a backup plugin

The WordPress repository contains a number of reliable plugins that can be used to back up your site. Search the repository for plugins and find one that suits your needs. In general, it’s best to use plugins that have a large number of installs and have been recently updated. This usually indicates a high quality, well supported plugin.
